The Annual Georgia National Fair (Gallery)
Turkey legs and funnel cakes, Ferris wheels and an agri-lift, kettle corn and saltwater taffy, tilt-a-whirls and bumper cars, apple-dumplings and twinkling lights, best-in-show and racing pigs, petting zoos and fireworks -these are a few of my favorite things! I could go on and on, but just hearing the name, ‘The Georgia National Fair’ brings on a whole other state of nostalgia that gives me all the feels.
I’ve been going to the Georgia National Fair since the time I was eleven and the magic of it is new every time. It’s that sweet mix of familiar traditions, smells, and sounds combined with the excitement of a new band playing or a new ride. I grew up in small-town Georgia where my friends entered their prized pig and champion heifer in the livestock competitions every year—it was the social event of the season. These days, living in Atlanta, I no longer know the livestock competition winners, but it's still the social event of the season for my friends and me who happily drive the easy hour and a half to spend a day or two at the fair.
I know for certain that this year the drive down will include singing along, windows down, “Tomorrow we can drive around this town…And let the cops chase us around…Hey Jealousy” as we get excited to see The Gin Blossoms perform.
And how fitting will it be when Diamond Rio performs ‘Meet in the Middle’ in the town known as ‘Where Georgia Comes together’ and friends from across the state connect?
I start walking your way you start walking mine We meet in the middle ‘neath that old Georgia pine We gain a lot of ground cuz we both give a little Ain't no road too long when we meet in the middle
I look forward to seeing y’all in the middle of the biggest event of the year—The Annual Georgia National Fair.
